Poultry Grit

Insoluble Grit : Gran-I-Grit

  • Grit helps improve feed efficiency and overall digestion- You'll get more out of your feed!
  • Granite grit (Gran-i-Grit) is different than other stones because it is less porous and has sharp edges. This means it will last longer in the gizzard and be more effective at tearing plant fibers.
  • Grit doesn't expire or go bad- You can order plenty and if you don't use it all, just store it for next year!
  • You put your birds on pasture- Grit is the only way to ensure they can digest it!
  • Even if grit is mixed in your feed, top-dressing or putting it out separately ensures each bird gets exactly the amount they need.
  • There are not enough stones of the right size for your birds in your pasture, unless you live on a gravel pit. See pictures below for sizes available.
  • See this issue of the Fertrell "Notes & Quotes", September - October 2014 for additional info on grit.  The article is on page 2 of the issue.
  • For best results with layer hens, offer both insoluble grit (Gran-I-Grit) and soluble grit (Oyster shells or Limestone grit).

CAUTION: Chicks and poults can mistake grit for feed with damaging results. Help them establish correct feeding habits by sprinkling grit over their feed for the first two days. After that, offer grit free choice in separate hoppers. Alternatively, avoid ALL Grit on Days 1-2 and begin feeding it on Day 3.

Soluble Grit : Limestone Grit

Limestone grit can replaces oyster shells as it is harder than shells and will help with the crushing of the feed in the gizzard. It is soluble, so it provides extra calcium to the birds.   It needs to be used in combination with an insoluble grit such as Gran-I-Grit, as it is not a replacement for granite grit.

MICRONA™ can also be sprinkled in the coop after cleaning the bedding, at the rate of one handful per square foot.  Its high pH can help prevent the proliferation of bacteria such as salmonella as they need low pH to thrive.
