Peat Moss

Peat moss is a great addition to potting soil and seed starter soil mixes. Some of the properties of peat moss are:

preventing soil compaction
improving drainage
moisture absorption
holding nutrients

However, peat moss also really shines as an addition to poultry bedding. Its pH prevents the production of ammonia. It can be used on its own, or mixed with wood shavings and/or chopped straw for best results. You can layer the different materials and let the chickens scratch and mix it all together. The down side is a little more dust.
